One of the most common questions I'm asked is, "How big should our wedding cake be?"
The truth is, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Every wedding is unique, and choosing the right size wedding cake depends on your celebration. there's no rigid formula.
However, there are a few key factors to consider when choosing the right size wedding cake, such as guest numbers and how you plan to serve it.
You Don’t Need to Cater for Every Wedding Guest
It's tempting to assume you need a slice of cake for every guest, but not everyone will take a piece. Whether they're too busy dancing, have already indulged in the wedding feast, or don't have a sweet tooth, there will always be some guests who pass on the cake.
I always recommend catering for around 75% of your total guest count. this strikes the perfect balance between having enough cake and avoiding unnecessary waste.

When Will You Serve Your Wedding Cake?
The timing of your cake cutting can influence how much of it gets eaten. If you're serving your cake as part of your evening buffet, remember that many guests will be on the dance floor, enjoying cocktails or winding down from the main meal. Cake may not be at the top of their minds at this stage.
If you'd like your cake to be a bigger part of the celebration, consider serving it earlier or alongside coffee and desserts. I’ve written a blog on alternative cake cutting times, you can read it here.
Will You Have a Smaller Celebration the Day After Your Wedding?
Many couples extend their celebrations with a relaxed gathering the following day.
whether it's a brunch, afternoon tea, or an intimate get-together with close family and friends. If this is part of your plan, you might want to ensure you have extra cake to share with those attending.
Do You Plan to Keep the Top Tier of Your Wedding Cake?
Holding onto the top tier is a tradition that's making a comeback!
Some couples save it for their first anniversary, while others enjoy it for the days after the wedding as a special treat.
If this is something you'd like to do, factor it into your cake size so you don't run short on servings for your guests.
What to Do with Leftover Wedding Cake
If you do find yourself with leftover cake, don't worry! There are plenty of ways to make the most of it:
Package slices for guests who couldn't attend on the day.
Enjoy it yourselves - wedding cake makes for a lovely treat in the days following the big event.
Freeze it so you can save some cake for a future occasion. Many sponge cakes freeze beautifully and taste just as good when defrosted properly.
