10 Essential questions to ask your wedding cake designer before booking

March 27, 2025 Jo Harper

Your wedding cake is more than just cake. It reflects your style and is a sweet way to treat your guests. Choosing the right wedding cake designer is key to ensuring your cake is beautiful and delicious. Before you book, here are 10 essential questions to ask your cake designer to ensure they're the perfect fit for your big day.

Are you available on my wedding date?

This is the first and most crucial question. How heart-breaking would it be to fall in love with a cake designer's work only to find they're already booked.

How far in advance do we need to book?

As soon as possible! However, some late availability may be possible during quieter months. As with all wedding suppliers, if you know who you want on board to make your dream day a reality, book them ASAP. The details can be confirmed nearer your big day. You can 'save your date' with a £100 deposit, securing your date in my diary.

Can you accommodate my style and design ideas?

Every cake designer has their signature style, which is likely one of the reasons you are drawn to them. However, if you have fallen in love with details from other cake designs, I can use them as inspiration for your cake design. I will not replicate another cake maker's design.

What flavours do you offer?

I have an extensive flavour menu, ranging from the classics to something more indulgent. With new flavours often being added. you can Take a look at my menu here.

If you don't see a flavour listed on my menu that you would like, ask—I can create it for you.

Do you offer cake samples?

I offer postal cake-tasting boxes. Each box includes six different flavour sponges (three of the most popular from the menu, alongside three I have thoughtfully handpicked). The boxes are carefully packaged and sent via Royal Mail Tracked 24, so they should arrive with you within 24-48 hours.

Do you cater to dietary requirements?

Please advise me when booking if you or any of your guests have dietary requirements. These can often be accommodated with additional sweet treats, ensuring no cross-contamination risk.

Do you deliver and set up the cake?

Delivery and set-up of your cake are all part of the service. I aim to deliver your cake 2-3 hours before your ceremony. This is the ideal time, as most of the venue set-up is complete by then. Approximately one month before your big day, I will contact your venue directly to discuss my arrival time.

Do you supply a cake stand?

If you need a cake stand for your wedding cake, I can help you find the right one. We can discuss this during your cake consultation. I have many options for you to choose from. However, I recommend checking with your venue first, as most provide a stand as part of their package—just be sure to look at it to ensure it suits your cake display.

Stand hire is generally £80 per stand. This includes a damage deposit of £50. The deposit will be returned to you when the stand is returned to me within seven days of your wedding, undamaged.

What happens if something goes wrong on the day?

I have a network of trusted cake makers I can call on should I need help delivering your cake due to an issue with my car or being unwell.

I also check traffic conditions on the morning of your wedding to ensure I am aware of any issues before heading off. Additionally, I bring a complete repair kit to the set-up in case any minor repairs need to be made upon arrival.

What happens after the wedding?

I provide all my clients with a detailed Cake Care Guide a few weeks before their big day. This includes complete instructions on how to store their cake and tips on how to freeze it—whether it's a whole cake or portioned slices—to keep it fresh for as long as possible.

Your wedding cake is a special part of your day, and finding the right designer ensures it's everything you've dreamed of.

These essential questions will help you feel confident in your choice and provide a smooth, stress-free process.

Are you in search of a wedding cake that is not only spectacular but also delicious?
