Springtime in the UK is one of the very best times of year to get married. Everything feels like it's awakening and coming back to life. The trees are in blossom, gardens are bursting with colour, and there are so many beautiful flowers in season.
The weather is also kinder. Spring is usually warm, but not uncomfortably hot, with a soft cloud cover that makes photographs flattering.
Compare that to my own wedding day, which took place in mid-July and was around 30°C. (Let me tell you, in a bridal gown, it felt like walking around with a duvet on!)
Guests in their finery can also find extreme heat uncomfortable, and no one wants squinty eyes in their wedding photos. For me, spring is the perfect balance: fresh, romantic, and comfortable for everyone.
Colours and Flowers in Full Bloom
One of the joys of spring is the season's gorgeous colour palette. Soft pastels such as blush pink, lilac, and buttery yellow dominate, with pops of coral and blue adding vibrancy. These tones can influence every detail, from bridesmaid dresses to table flowers, and, of course, your wedding cake.
When designing a spring-inspired cake, I love incorporating these hues into my sugar flowers. Imagine cascading peonies in soft blush tones, delicate bluebells crafted with intricate detail, or crisp white roses accented by pale green foliage. Pastels are an elegant choice, while bolder spring colours add a fun, modern feel.
Seasonal flowers
Spring weddings offer endless floral inspiration, such as peonies, tulips, lilacs, and cherry blossoms, to mention a few. When paired with wedding flowers that are available year-round, such as roses, gypsophila, and hydrangeas, they create a delightful addition that nods to the season.
They can be carried through bouquets, venue décor, and recreated in sugar for the cake itself. Sugar flowers enable you to enjoy delicate blooms like peonies or Cherry blossoms. They're a gorgeous way to tie in your wedding cake with the fresh floral theme of your day.
Flavours to Delight Your Guests
Spring weddings also call for lighter, fresher flavours. Something uplifting and seasonal. Some favourites I'd recommend:
Lemon and Elderflower – a bright, refreshing classic.
White Chocolate and Raspberry – sweet, tart, and elegant.
Vanilla and strawberry – a British classic.
Strawberry and Champagne – light and celebratory.
Lemon and raspberry - refreshing and tart
