5 free ways to create a beautiful wedding cake display

You've chosen your wedding cake, spent time thinking about the design, colours, and all the little details, so when it finally arrives at your venue, you want it to be seen.

But creating a beautiful wedding cake display doesn't have to mean spending more money on a backdrop, flowers, or styling.

In fact, some of the most effective ways to make your wedding cake look beautiful are completely free.

As a wedding cake designer, I see cakes displayed in all sorts of venues, and I've learned that the standard cake table isn't always the best way to showcase your cake. Sometimes all it takes is a little thought about where you display your cake, what's around it, and how it will look in photographs.

So before you add more to your wedding budget, here are five simple ways to create a beautiful wedding cake display using things you may already have.

Find a beautiful backdrop

First, look at what will be behind the cake.

It sounds obvious, but every photo of your wedding cake will include whatever is behind it. A beautiful cake can easily get lost against a busy wall, a plain background, or distracting signs, doors, or venue equipment (think fire extinguishers!).

And here's something I always suggest to my couples: don't assume the venue's usual cake placement is the best place for your cake.

Most wedding venues have a standard spot for the cake, usually a corner out of the way. And sometimes it's perfect. But it isn't necessarily the only option.

When you're visiting your venue, have a look around and ask yourself:

  • Is there a beautiful feature we'd love to capture?

  • Is there interesting stonework or an archway?

  • Could you position the cake in front of a window?

  • Is there a fireplace or another architectural feature that would frame it beautifully?

  • Is it somewhere guests will actually notice?

You don't need a floral wall or expensive backdrop when the room itself can do the work for you.

A little tip: don't just look at the cake from where it will be displayed. Stand several feet away and imagine yourself looking at it as a guest would. Then imagine your photographer standing there too. What's in the frame?

Sometimes moving the cake just a few metres can make a surprisingly big difference.

Place your bouquet next to the cake

Your bouquet is one of the most personal floral arrangements you'll have on the day.

After your ceremony and entrance into the wedding breakfast, you will need somewhere to put your bouquet. Your cake table could be the perfect place.

Ask your florist, wedding planner or venue coordinator for a vase to place beside your cake for your bouquet once you're finished carrying it.

It creates a beautiful little connection between your flowers and your cake, and it doesn't cost you anything extra.

It works particularly well if the flowers on the cake reflect the flowers in your bouquet. Even if your cake doesn't have flowers, the bouquet can add colour and a lovely sense of occasion to the display.

Just remember: keep the flowers positioned so they don't touch the cake or interfere with cutting and serving.

Add something meaningful

This is one of my favourite ways to make a wedding cake display feel personal.

Instead of buying another decorative object purely for the cake table, shop your home, your mum's, nan's or aunts' homes.

Do you or they have a beautiful cake stand you can use? Perhaps there's a family cake knife that's been used for generations. Maybe you have a favourtite engagement photograph, or a photo of someone special who couldn't be there.

Perhaps your nan taught you to bake. Maybe your mum has lent you her wedding cake knife. Perhaps a much-loved family member is no longer with you but contributed to the wedding?

Including something like that beside your wedding cake can make the display about much more than simply making the table look pretty.

It becomes part of your story, and you can't buy that.

Make the most of natural light

Good lighting makes a huge difference in how your guests see your wedding cake and how it looks in your photographs.

Look around your venue for a spot that benefits from beautiful natural light.

Again, this doesn't necessarily mean the usual cake-table position.

A cake tucked into a corner may not show its best, especially if it has delicate details, textured decoration, or a beautiful finish you want guests to appreciate.

But there's an important little caveat here: natural light doesn't mean direct sunlight.

Direct sunlight can create harsh shadows in photographs and, depending on the time of year and the type of cake, can also create problems for your cake and delicate decorations.

What you're looking for is lovely, soft, indirect daylight.

If your venue has large windows, a bright room, or another naturally well-lit area, ask whether you can display your cake there instead.

And don't forget to consider what the light will be doing when you're actually cutting the cake.

Look beyond the standard cake table

have a look around your venue and see what furniture is already there.

A standard three-foot round cake table might be perfectly practical, but it isn't your only option.

Perhaps your venue has a beautiful vintage console, an old dresser, a marble-topped table or another piece of furniture that would make a wonderful base for your cake.

Using an existing piece of furniture can completely change the feel of the display without adding another item to your wedding budget.

It can also help your cake feel more connected to the venue's character.

But always ask first.

Don't assume that because a beautiful table is sitting in the corner of the venue, it's available for your cake. Your venue may have specific rules about which furniture you can move, where you can display food, or what you can place on certain surfaces.

And there's one final thing I'd consider when choosing your cake display location:

Can you cut the cake there too?

If possible, I'd always suggest choosing a cake display location that works for the cake cutting as well.

That way, your cake doesn't need to be moved, and your photographer can capture the cake cutting in the same beautiful setting you've chosen for the display.

Think about where you'll stand, where your photographer will stand and whether there is enough space around the table for you both to cut the cake comfortably.

A beautiful cake display isn't just about how the cake looks sitting on the table. It's also about how that moment will work when you, your photographer and your guests are gathered around it.

You don't always need to add more.

When it comes to wedding cake displays, it's easy to assume that making the cake look more impressive means adding more things around it.

But sometimes the opposite is true.

A beautiful backdrop, your bouquet, something meaningful from home, lovely natural light and an interesting piece of existing venue furniture can all help create a cake display that feels thoughtful and personal without spending a penny.

So before you add another item to your wedding shopping list, look around you first.

Your venue, your flowers, your home and your own story might already contain everything you need.

And if you've chosen a cake with lots of beautiful detail, sometimes the best thing you can do is simply give it a little space to shine.
